Abstract

Hypertension is defined as a more frequent medical complication during pregnancy and is an important cause of
maternal-fetal morbidity and mortality worldwide. In this paper we want to determine if gestational weight gain is a risk
factor and development of hypertensive disorders of pregnancy in women who are treated at the Women's Hospital of La
Paz. This study is quantitative, descriptive, and retrospective and with a transversal approach, the medical records of the
patients were reviewed in the period from February to May 2017, the study universe included 18 pregnant patients. 66%
of women of gestational age had a higher BMI, 34% normal, of the latter 12% with a diagnosis of hypertension,
classified as 89% preeclampsia, 11% eclampsia. Higher frequency in ages between 20 and 30 years, overweight or
obese, with an average weight gain of 12.7 Kg. With these results, we cannot confirm those already known by scientific
evidence, because only eight of 148 patients with BMI Superior (overweight or obese) presented hypertension.
